Nepal’s Pharmaceutical Industry Roadmap: WHO GMP Certification and Domestic Medicine Production Targets

Nepal Strengthens Its Pharmaceutical Manufacturing Sector

Nepal is taking significant steps to strengthen its pharmaceutical manufacturing industry by improving quality standards and increasing domestic production of essential medicines. According to the national roadmap, the country aims to achieve universal compliance with World Health Organization Good Manufacturing Practices (WHO GMP) while also reducing dependence on imported medicines.

These initiatives are expected to enhance medicine quality, improve patient safety, strengthen regulatory oversight, and promote self-reliance in the pharmaceutical sector.

WHO GMP Certification Targets

WHO Good Manufacturing Practices (WHO GMP) are internationally recognized standards that ensure medicines are consistently manufactured and controlled according to quality requirements.

Current Status

  • 65% of domestic pharmaceutical industries are WHO GMP certified.

National Targets

  • 90% WHO GMP-certified industries by 2027
  • 100% WHO GMP-certified industries by 2030

Achieving full WHO GMP certification will:

  • Improve the quality, safety, and efficacy of medicines.
  • Increase public confidence in locally manufactured pharmaceutical products.
  • Enhance the competitiveness of Nepali pharmaceutical industries.
  • Create opportunities for exporting medicines to international markets.
  • Support Nepal’s goal of building a stronger and more reliable pharmaceutical manufacturing sector.

Domestic Production of Essential Medicines

Essential medicines are those that satisfy the priority healthcare needs of the population. Increasing domestic production helps ensure uninterrupted medicine availability and reduces dependence on foreign suppliers.

Current Status

  • Domestic industries currently produce approximately 51% of Nepal’s essential medicines.

National Targets

  • 60% domestic production by 2027
  • 70% domestic production by 2030

Increasing local production is expected to:

  • Reduce reliance on imported medicines.
  • Strengthen medicine security during emergencies and supply chain disruptions.
  • Support Nepal’s pharmaceutical industry and create employment opportunities.
  • Improve affordability and accessibility of essential medicines.
  • Promote long-term pharmaceutical self-sufficiency.

Progress at a Glance

Indicator Current Target (2027) Target (2030)
WHO GMP-certified domestic pharmaceutical industries 65% 90% 100%
Domestic production of essential medicines 51% 60% 70%

Why These Targets Matter

The roadmap reflects Nepal’s commitment to developing a modern, high-quality pharmaceutical industry. Expanding WHO GMP certification ensures that locally manufactured medicines meet internationally accepted quality standards, while increasing domestic production improves national medicine security and reduces import dependence.

Together, these targets will contribute to:

  • Better access to quality-assured medicines.
  • Stronger pharmaceutical regulation.
  • Sustainable industrial growth.
  • Greater resilience of Nepal’s healthcare system.
  • Progress toward pharmaceutical self-reliance.

Nepal’s vision of achieving 100% WHO GMP certification by 2030 and increasing domestic production of essential medicines to 70% represents a major milestone for the country’s pharmaceutical sector. Continued collaboration among pharmaceutical industries, regulators, healthcare professionals, and policymakers will be essential to achieving these ambitious goals and ensuring that safe, effective, and affordable medicines are available to all citizens.
