List of Free Medicine in Nepal
Health posts to basic hospitals, these 98 types of medicines are now free (with names).
The government has introduced a treatment protocol for basic health services to provide free basic health services from government health institutions across the country and to bring uniformity in treatment and services.
According to the standard treatment protocol based on basic health services, 98 types of medicines are available free of charge from basic hospitals/primary health centers, basic health centers/health posts. Some of the 98 types of drugs are not available in basic health centers and health posts. But in basic hospitals/primary health centers, all 98 types of medicines prescribed by the government will be available free of cost.
Even before the release of this protocol, the government has been providing 70 types of medicines free of cost to health institutions. According to the previous rules, 35 types of medicines were available free of charge from health posts, 58 from primary health centers and 70 from district hospitals. Now, according to the new protocol, 98 types of medicines should be available in health institutions 24 hour. Otherwise, according to the Public Health Service Act and regulations, there is a provision to take action against the health institution.
The government has added and modified the list of medicines according to time keeping in mind the diseases and problems. Among the 70 types of medicines that were available earlier, some unnecessary medicines have been removed, while medicines used in the treatment of non-communicable diseases, mental diseases and other health problems have been added.
These are the 98 types of medicines that are available free of charge:
